Richard J. "Dick" Christensen, age 69,
of Ovid, died Saturday (Dec 3) at Geneva General Hospital .
A private reception will be held by Dick's family to celebrate his
life, as he had requested during his recent illness. Prayers of
committal and military honors will be held at Sampson Veterans
Memorial Cemetery in June of 2012, to which all are invited to join
his family for the ceremony. A picnic reception will follow at
Sampson State Park on the day of the burial. Kindly consider a

Lodi, NY 14860, in lieu of flowers. In the days and months ahead,
please remember Dick with a smile, and keep him and his family in
your prayers.
Dick was born on September 22, 1942 in Ithaca, a son of the late
William and Catherine (Keenan) Christensen. He was a lifelong
resident of the area, graduating from Ovid Central School in 1960.
He attended Cortland State Teachers College, and graduated from the
Willard School of Nursing. Upon graduation, he entered the US Army
and served as a nurse in a military hospital in Vietnam. During his
professional career he was employed at Willard Psychiatric Center
and retired from the Dick VanDyke Addition Treatment Center in 2000.
He loved hunting deer in the deep woods of the Finger Lakes National
Forest, was an avid sky diver and became an accomplished bowler
later in life, competing in numerous leagues and tournaments in
Trumansburg, Ithaca, and Geneva. Dick was also elected as Seneca
County Coroner, serving from 1994 to 2003. His gentle demeanor and
genuine kindness will be fondly remembered by his family and the
community.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; a son, Lars Christensen of
Brooklyn,NY; a daughter, Elka (Michael Brewster) Christensen of
Sydney, Australia; his brothers, John "Jack" (Emma) Christensen of
Hayts Corners, Carl (Gail) Christensen of Willard, a brother in law,
Doug (Carol) Ferrell of Binghamton, and sisters in law, Linda (Bob)
Hart of Colorado Springs, CO, and Joan (Jim) Bartholomew of El
Cerrito, CA, and several nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in
death by his brother, Paul earlier this year |
