Phyllis M.
Wheeler, age 86,
of Hector, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2012
passing away at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls.
Born on October
14, 1925 in the Town of Covert, Phyllis was the daughter of the late
Lewis and Mildred (Emmons) Dawson II. Phyllis had a variety of
occupations throughout her lifetime, as a young girl during World
War II, she rode a motorcycle to Ithaca to work at Ithaca Gun, and
after her marriage to Ora Jay Wheeler on November 11, 1946, she took
temporary work to help the family. Those workplaces included Babcock
Hatchery in Jacksonville, Ridley’s Book Bindery in Ithaca, Taballi’s
Restaurant in Interlaken, and lastly, the Tompkins County Hospital.
She and Jay made their home in Hector nearly 40 years ago.
Besides Jay, her
three children and their families were the “light” of her life. She
enjoyed bowling, boating, dancing, playing cards with her family and
friends, and of course, loved to gamble. As a homemaker, Phyllis
enjoyed cooking and could even pass venison as roast beef to her
guests. She was feisty so no one ever dared criticize her meals.
(Truth being, they were always delicious!)
Phyllis is
survived by her children, Cynthia (Tom) Lilly of Ithaca; Charles
Wheeler and Susan (Charles Hendry) Wheeler, all of Valois;
grandchildren, Andrew Lilly, Chuck Haviland, Shelby Hagar, Chad
Haviland, Joshua and Olivia Waschezyn; 12 great grandchildren; a
special nephew, Roger (Rita) Swartwood of Burdett; and longtime
friends, Verna May of Lansing and Barbara Wheeler of Penn Yan. Last,
but not least, she leaves behind her very loving, barking, circling
dog, Holly, a Sheltie Collie.
