Margaret E. Staples, age 72,
longtime resident of the Spencer and Candor areas, died at Beechtree
Care Center in Ithaca on Monday, August 30, 2010.
Margaret was born on March 31, 1938 in Scranton, PA, the eldest of 12
children to George and Marie (Heller) Staples Sr. Diagnosed with
Cerebral Palsy at birth, Margaret defied the medical specialists of
the era, and vowed to do everything they told her she “couldn’t”. She
got out of her wheelchair as a young girl, completed her education,
raised three healthy children, obtained her driver’s license and acted
as a caregiver to her family for her entire lifetime. She was an avid
sports fan, and no one was permitted to speak badly of the Yankee’s in
her presence! She saw to it that every person in her family received a
crocheted blanket, hats, mittens and dolls, and supported her children
and grandchildren in their sports teams, especially EYOTA Fast pitch,
the traveling softball league.
