Charles "Chuck" Silas Hubbell

Enfield – Charles Silas Hubbell, age 88, lifelong resident of Enfield, passed away at home on February 17, 2024.

Charles was born on September 29, 1935, one of 12 children of the late Raymond and Hilda (Jones) Hubbell. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Marine Corps. He faithfully and honorably served his country until he was discharged in March of 1957. Charles (‘Chuck’ to those who knew him well) proudly owned and operated the Hubbell Construction Company for over 30 years, serving all the greater Ithaca area by building and renovating many homes and businesses. He prided himself on many things, including the pond he had developed in his beautiful woods. One of his favorite spots was a pavilion he had built overlooking the pond. He would often sit and enjoy the view with his beloved wife Shirley.

Married for 65 years, Shirley truly was his whole world. Chuck loved and loyally cared for her up until her passing in 2022. They would often times enjoy walking through the woods on his property in Enfield, or in their younger years, riding through them on snowmobiles with friends from all around the area. They frequently travelled to Florida every year where he was known to get a cigar or two and enjoy the weather. He remained a member of the Masonic Lodge for 50 years and was also heavily involved in many other local programs. He was an avid member of the Enfield community, being active in many local events and partaking in many gatherings at the Enfield Grange.

A prideful, stoic man, Chuck was treasured by those that were close to him. As stern as he could be, he had a kind heart, full of quiet emotion. It wouldn't be unlike him to greet you with a smirk and a handshake like a steel vise at the door, or to go hang out in his shop, where no tool was ever out of place. Chuck was always working on some sort of project. There was hardly a time when you wouldn't find him wearing his faithful Carhartt jacket with either sawdust or oil on his hands. He was a fine craftsman and skilled carpenter, with many around thankful for his talents. Whether it be small projects in someone's home, or entire houses, or just the relationships he built over the years, there are countless lives he touched.

When Chuck wasn't to be found, he was most likely enjoying one of the several gun ranges he constructed on his property. He built several shooting benches and, having been recognized with a badge from the Marine Corps for Expert Rifleman and Expert Pistol, it wasn't unusual for him to be found sighting in some new rifle, pistol or shotgun. Chuck was an outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, some fishing and loved chopping his own firewood. He was a proud hunter, who never gave up his hunting license.

Charles is survived by three children, Bonnie Griffin, Linda Crombie, and Thomas (Dee) Hubbell; three grandchildren, Kirk Griffin, Kelly (Scott) Sherwood, and Christopher (Katelyn) Hubbell; six great grandchildren, Rowan, Killian, Benjamin, Genevieve, Jackson, and Kaden; two siblings, Michael (Patty) Hubbell and Nancy Breen; many nieces, nephews, and a large extended family. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. Hubbell in 2022; and nine siblings.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00pm at Enfield Christian Cemetery to honor both Charles "Chuck" and Shirley J. Hubbell. A Celebration of both of their lives will immediately follow at the Enfield Grange until 5.
