Arthur J. Cowan, age 76, lifetime resident of Ovid, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, in Geneva, following several weeks of hospitalization.
Art was born on January 4, 1949, the only child of William "Midge" and Susan (nee Legott) Cowan. Art was a graduate of South Seneca High School and worked as a fire and safety officer at Willard Psychiatric Center until its closing, subsequently training as a corrections officer and eventually retiring from Five Points Correctional Facility. Art also served as a special patrol officer at the county office building for the Seneca County Sheriff's Department. A staunch supporter of the Ovid Fire Department and Croton Engine & Hose Company, Art held numerous positions of leadership, including president, lieutenant, captain, and2nd assistant chief. His involvement in the fire department was a significant aspect of his life.
Art was a devoted family man who embraced the joys and challenges of life with his loved ones. He made their home the focal point of gatherings, where laughter and love flourished. Art was passionate for sports and a lifelong New York Giants fan, an avid golfer, and a talented bowler and athlete, having been a star pitcher for the Willard Softball Team.
He is survived by his children: Tomilyn (Jim) Knittle Petris, Scott Knittle, Kristen(Dennis) Cowan Jacot, and Michelle (Shawn) Cowan Hall, along with his treasured grandchildren, which include Ashley (Doug) Sponseller, Chelsea (Ed) Notebaert, Niki(Josh) Smith, Kyle Petris, Martin Jasniewski, Shawn and Gianni Hall, Gage and Ella Jacot. Art was also blessed with great-grandchildren Henry, Harper, and Hudson Sponseller, Kassidy Notebaert, and Elon Smith, each of whom brought joy to his life. He was also a loving companion to his pets, Chu Chu, Jeter, and Molly, who brought him comfort, joy, and unconditional love throughout the years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 49 years, Beverly A. Swick, whopassed away on July 13, 2022, and his daughter, KelliJo Knittle, who left this world onMarch 2, 2025. Their collective absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of those remaining, yet their legacy of strength, love, and resilience will forever echo through their lives.
The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home from 2:00 to 4:00pm on Thursday, May 29, 2025. A Party for Artie will be hosted by the family at the Ovid VFW from 5:00 to 7:00pm the same day.
