Eric C. Bateman, 56, of Varick, New York, passed away suddenly on September 25, 2026, near his residence in a tragic accident.
He was born on October 21, 1969, in Corning, New York, graduated from Athens High School in 1987, and went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University and a master’s from the University of Buffalo.
Eric retired from Canandaigua Academy as Library Media Specialist in 2026. His passion for reading, music, learning, and teaching was an inspiration to all. He was a gifted librarian, teacher, musician, artist, writer, historian, candle-maker, beer-brewer, DJ, and trivia buff. Moreover, Eric was gentle, kind, loving, patient, and humble; a beloved and cherished husband, father, and friend. His untimely departure will leave an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Rachelle Bateman, and children, Katherine “Katie,” Jonathan “Jon,” and Alison “Alie” Bateman; Jared and Kendra Fletcher; father, Glen Tolbert, sister Marilyn Foster Tolbert (Mark Maull), Lloyd Tolbert, Wayne (Tina) Tolbert and aunt, Janet (Terry) Miller. He was predeceased by his mother, Barbara.
A private service will be held at the family’s discretion.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Wood Library, 134 North Main Street. Canandaigua, NY 14424.
