Gregory R Hovencamp, 41, of 2075 Wilson Road, Ovid, NY, former lifelong resident of Trumansburg, passed away unexpectedly after succumbing to a longtime illness with alcoholism. He fought a long, hard battle which ended peacefully at home on January 21, 2021.
Greg was a loving son, brother and uncle. Those who knew him know he was smart, creative, compassionate - a gentle, caring, kind soul, who loved his family deeply. His family truly loved him and tried everything from being supportive to tough love as he struggled. The grief he felt from losing his dad last year was extremely hard on him.
Greg had a passion for learning. He excelled in his education graduating with high honors from TC3 with an A.A. degree, completing the Paralegal Program, and graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A from Binghamton University. He was an avid reader, articulate, could write about and debate any subject; loved talking about his many interests, especially sports, which he shared with his Dad and brother. He was musically talented playing acoustic and electric guitars. Greg spent the last 10 years helping take care of his dad and spending time with him as he battled Parkinson's Disease. The time they spent together forged a deeper bond between them.
Greg will be missed everyday by his mother, Marian Hovencamp, brother Scott (Shannon) Hovencamp, nieces Natalee and Savannah Hovencamp, maternal grandmother Marian Brand, his many loving aunts, uncles and cousins, and longtime friend Wiley Broadwell who provided him with unconditional friendship. We'd be amiss if we didn't mention his love for animals and is already missed by his dog Chloe and cat Niko. He was preceded in death by his father Stephen Hovencamp who passed just 7 months ago. They are reunited in a place with no pain or suffering. Life will never be the same without these two special men. Our hearts are truly broken.
Tomorrow is never promised, so love and appreciate the people in your life. Be kind to others, as you never know what struggles they are going through.
The family will hold a private memorial ceremony this summer to celebrate and honor the lives of Greg and Steve.
