Freda L. Hayes, age 80, of Lodi passed away at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
Freda was born in Covert on November 8, 1935, a daughter of the late Earl and Norma (Ike) Westervelt. She worked at Willard Psychiatric Center for 10 years in housekeeping but her true passion was raising her family. A phenomenal cook, Freda was best known for her macaroni and cheese, potato salad, and apple pie, all of which she enjoyed making for family gatherings. As a young child, she sang on the radio and continued singing throughout her life at various local events. Freda was a member of the Red Hat Society for many years.
Freda is survived by five children, Teresa Swartout, Cindy Hayes, Connie (John) Wrend, Sandra (Thomas) Dunn, and Mickey (Katey Gormley) Hayes; 13 grandchildren, Carrie (Robert), Matthew, Joey (Breanna), Eric, Adam, Kristin (Manney), Benjamin, Michael, Bonnie, Cullen, Payton, Dillon, and Jessalyn; six great grandchildren, Sammy, Genna, Andrew, Vivi, Jonathan, and Jocylyn; eight siblings, Peggy Powell, Bonnie Schlappi, Larry, Mike, and Scott Westervelt, Marlene Shade, Phyllis McArthur, and Shelby Carroll; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Freda was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hayes in 2002; a daughter, Vicky Becker in 1993; and a sister, Linda McLaughlin.
The family will be present to receive friends from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 South Main Street, Ovid. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 12:00pm at the funeral home. Prayers of committal will be held in West Lodi Cemetery.
