Howard E. Porter, age 82, longtime resident of Powell Road, died at the VA Medical Center in Syracuse on October 11, 2025.
Howard was born in Ovid on September 24, 1943, one of ten children born to the late Clarence and Carey (nee Quigley). He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War in the 9th Infantry Division and 11th Cavalry from 1967-1969. Howard had worked at Willard Psychiatric Center, and then managed various properties on North Campus of Cornell before becoming a bus driver for CU Transit and later TCAT.
He is survived by his wife of over 40 years, Cherry (nee Mooney) of Ithaca; a son, Joseph (Mindy) Porter of Interlaken; his grandsons, Gregory, Jonathon, Gabriel and Brian Porter; a sister, Betty (Dick) Westbrook of Interlaken and many nieces and nephews. Howard was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Frank Sr., George, Clarence Jr., Carl and William Porter, and by sisters, Florence Champion and Irene Stevens.
A private family graveside service with military honors will be held in the Spring of 2026 at Fair View Cemetery in Sheldrake.
