James A. "Jim" Gabriel Obituary

James Alan Gabriel, 76, of Ovid, passed away in the company of family at the Pathway Home on Sunday, December 10, 2023.  Jim was born on September 11, 1947, in Batavia, NY to the late Stephen and Anna (Gross) Gabriel of Alabama, NY.

Jim attended Oakfield-Alabama Central School and earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics from Alfred University where he was a member of the cross-country and track teams prior to enrolling in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.  After serving in the U.S. Army, Jim earned his Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School.

Upon admission to the New York State Bar, Jim joined the Franklin Law Office in Ovid, NY where he eventually became partners with the late Benjamin Franklin.  Jim also served on the Board of Directors of Community Bank, N.A. and provided counsel to local municipalities.

Jim was an avid turkey and waterfowl hunter who enjoyed early mornings in the woods and afternoon naps at the Camp.  On summer evenings, “Pop G” enjoyed searching for lucky stones during family walks on Elm Beach. 

Jim is survived by his loving wife Catherine (nee Blake); brothers Edward (Audrey) and Stephen (Diane) Gabriel, Jr.; stepchildren Shane (Hayley) O’Connor and Brooke (Daniel) Palmer; chosen children Ramon (Niki) Estevez, Jr. and Leah Wise; four grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family of James A. Gabriel would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers and staff of the Pathway Home of the Finger Lakes in Seneca Falls, NY.  Their devoted care and support exemplify the highest standards of compassion and grace.  Thank you for welcoming us into to your home and embracing us as family.  Services were held privately by the family at Jim's request.  Kindly consider a donation in Jim’s memory to Pathway Home of the Finger Lakes, PO Box 516, Seneca Falls, NY  13148.
