Melvin E. Quinn, age 89, of Ovid died at Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, April 30, 2021.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to Noon on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Rob Mellgard will then be held at Noon, followed by prayers of committal at Ovid Union Cemetery. Melvin was born on September 11, 1931 in Ovid, a son of the late Harry and Helen (Huff) Quinn. He was a 1949 graduate of Ovid Central School. Melvin worked at Willard State Hospital for 37 years, starting out as a kitchen helper then assistant cook, cook, and retiring as head cook on September 11, 1986.
He was a member of the Fingerlakes and Willard Chess Societies and the US Chess Federation where he played in many tournaments and individual matches. He loved sports and was an avid Yankees fan, past member of Bonavista Golf Course, and season ticket holder for Syracuse University football. Most of all, he enjoyed traveling, visiting 55 national parks, all 50 states, and 8 European countries.
Melvin is survived by his son, Richard “Rick” Quinn of Ovid; sister Dorothy Orme Scaggs of Lodi; and nieces Priscilla Cole and Jannaya Scott. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Martha Quinn; a daughter, Cynthia Quinn; and mother in law, Louise Stout.
