Elizabeth A.
“Tibby” Houseknecht, age 89,
of Ovid, passed away at her home on Tuesday (Dec 30).
The family will receive friends from Noon to 2:00pm on
Saturday (Jan 3) at Covert Funeral Home, Ovid, NY. The
funeral service will then be held there at 2:00pm, officiated
by Rev. Diane Walker of the Ovid Federated Church. Prayers of
Committal will be held at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken in

Elizabeth was born on December 1, 1919 in Troy, PA, a daughter
of the late Orley D. and Mary J. (Arnold) Tillotson. She moved
here as a young child and had attended the Lodi School. She
worked in the housekeeping department at Willard for many
years, rarely missing a day of work, retiring in 1982. She was
devoted to her family and looked forward to having people
around her everyday. She was known as “Grandma” by many, even
to those outside of the family.
She is survived by her children; Earl (Elaine) Houseknecht of
Lodi, Howard (Lorraine) Houseknecht of Hampton, VA, Scott
(Barb) Houseknecht of Burdett, Steven (Tammy) Houseknecht of
Brooksville, FL, Sharon (Bill) Manning of Ovid, and Kay Cole
of Interlaken 18 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 6
great-great grandchildren.
Tibby was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, by a son,
Kenneth in 1991, a daughter, Gloria Hageman in 1999, by a
grandson, Keith in 1981, and by a great grand daughter,
Felicia Westervelt in 2003, and by her siblings, Robert, Bill,
Don, Orley David, Ada and Harriet. |

Daniel A.
Gallagher, age 85,
formerly of Willard, died at the Geneva Living Center on
Wednesday (Dec 17).
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3:00pm on Saturday (Dec
20) at Holy Cross Catholic Church by Fr. Bart Minson. Prayers
of committal will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Daniel was born on September 12, 1923 in Willard, a son of the
late William and Sarah Grace (McGrane) Gallagher. He was a
graduate of Ovid High School and Niagara University. He served
in the US Army during WWII from 1943-1946. He returned to
Willard and worked at Sampson Air Force Base, and then became
a claims representative for the Social Security
Administration, retiring in 1978. He had been a member of the
VFW Post 6200 and American Legion Post 463.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Gwen (Tedd) Martz of
Syracuse, Margaret Cupp of Ithaca, Daniel Peltz of
Trumansburg, William Peltz of Texas and their families and his
sister-in-law, Alice Gallagher of Auburn. He was preceded in
death by his brothers, Howard and John and by sisters, Mary
Peltz and Grace Gallagher.

Charles E. “Chuck” Williams, age
77,
of Lodi, passed away at Community General Hospital in
Syracuse, on Wednesday (Dec 10, 2008).
Chuck was born on October 7, 1931 in Oneonta, NY son of the
late Robert and Irma (Scholl) Williams. He retired from
Binghamton Psychiatric Center in 1986, where he had been the
Plant Superintendent and then, Assistant Business Officer. His
career led him to various facilities in New York State, such
as, Willard, Sampson, Poughkeepsie, and Ogdensburg. He was an
integral person in the oversight of the construction of Broome
Developmental Center. Throughout his lifetime, he had been
active in various Methodist Churches, and had been a member of
the Ovid Federated Church at the time of his death. His other
memberships included the Harley Owners Group, American
Motorcycle Association, and the Good Sam Club. Chuck had been
elected Justice of the Peace in the Town of Lodi and
volunteered for the Lodi Fire Dept. For many years he served
on the Board of Directors of the GHS Federal Credit Union. He
enjoyed time spent with his family, camping, motorcycling, and
spending winters in Zephyrhills, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ethel (Nivison), his
children, Mark (Karen) Williams of Willard, NY, Beverly
(Kenneth) Patrick of Windsor, NY and Carol (J.Scott) Armstrong
of Binghamton, NY; grandchildren, Ashley, Brock and Stephanie
Williams, Andrew Patrick and Chelsea and Brooke Armstrong, a
sister; Nancy (Bill) Richardson of FL, and half sisters,
Louise Malone of PA, and Ruth Adams of IA, and a brother in
law, Richard Gallusser of Oneonta. He was predeceased by his
sister Marjorie Gallusser, half brother Robert Williams, his
special Aunt and Uncle, Welma and Otis Brockway and his
granddaughter Amy Williams
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 5:00pm on Sunday
(Dec 14) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main Street, Ovid. A
memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday (Dec 15) at
the Ovid Federated Church, 7137 Main Street, officiated by
Pastor Diane Walker. Interment will be held privately at
Seneca-Union Cemetery in Valois.

Linda Lee Ritchie Hurd, age 45,
of Wilcox Lane, passed away on Monday (Dec 10) at FF Thompson
Hospital in Canandaigua. Those who remember her will remember
the vibrant woman who loved dancing, racing and spending time
with her family and friends. She was loved by her family as
well as by many old and new friends. All are happy that she
found peace and comfort after many years of pain and illness.
Linda is survived by her son Jeffrey, his wife Cheryl and
their sons, Adam and Alex, all of Farmington. Adam and Alex
were the lights of her life. She is also survived by her
daughter, Michelle Hurd Cantando of Elmira. Linda was very
proud of her children and grandchildren. Linda is also
survived by her mother, Martha Ritchie of Huntington Living
Center in Waterloo, her brother William Ritchie and is wife,
Joyce of Interlaken and their daughter Amy, and William’s two
sons, John and Scott, and by a sister, Sandra Ritchie of Ovid.
Linda has gone to be with her loving father, Seward W.
Ritchie.
Linda had too many friends to list, but her family wishes to
thank all who have been loving and supportive over the years.
These friends gave their love, their time and assorted other
assistance to Linda for many years and they will never be
forgotten.
At Linda’s request, funeral arrangements have been entrusted
to Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main St, Ovid. Also, at her
request, private graveside services will be held at Holy Cross
Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s memory may

Hazel R. VanVleet, age 94,
of the Bixby Home in Interlaken, formerly of Juniper Manor in
Trumansburg, died on Monday (Dec 1) at Geneva General
Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday (Dec 5)
at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main St.,Ovid, officiated by
Pastor Nate Weidman of the Covert Baptist Church. Prayers of
committal will be held at Seneca-Union Cemetery in Valois.

Hazel was born in Perry City, NY on December 24, 1913, a
daughter of the late Frank and Mabel (Lamb) Rosbaugh. She
volunteered as a 4-H leader, and as a driver for South Seneca
Ambulance. She had been an active member of the Calvary
Baptist Church and of the Home Bureau and the Lodi Grange. She
retired from Willard Psychiatric Center in 1976, where she had
worked as a therapy aide.
She is survived by her children; Frank (Mary Louise) VanVleet
of Pine City, Mary (Lyle) Morrow of Lodi, Nelda J. MacDonald
of Varick, Dana G. VanVleet of Ovid, Clair A. VanVleet of
Florida, and Carl (Marsha) VanVleet of Lodi; her
daughter-in-law Brenda VanVleet of Romulus; 19 grandchildren;
27 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and a
brother, Donald Rosbaugh of Arizona. Hazel was preceded in
death by her husband, George VanVleet in 1983;her son, Doug
VanVleet; and by her brother Harold Rosbaugh and sister

Levi H. Karlsen, age 23,
of Romulus, died tragically at his home on Thursday (Nov 20).
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00pm on Tuesday

Levi was born on February 3, 1985 in Grand Forks, North
Dakota, the son of Karl and Christina (Alexander) Karlsen. His
family returned to Romulus in 1991, and he attended the
Romulus Central School. He had been employed as a machine
operator by Guardian Industries of Geneva since March of this
year.
He is survived by his daughters, Elletra and Ivy Karlsen of
Cayuga, NY, his parents, Karl (Cindy) Karlsen of Romulus;
sisters, Erin (Irvin) DeRoche of Gordon, GA, Kati Karlsen of
Montgomery, NY and a brother, Alex Karlsen of Romulus, his
grandparents, Junior (Alice) Karlsen of Romulus, Arlene
(Randy) Meltzer of Sacramento, CA, and Art Alexander of
Murphy’s, CA, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Levi was

Ellie G. Cassidy, 81,
of Waterloo-Geneva Road, and longtime resident of Ovid, died
on Wednesday (Nov 19) at Geneva General Hospital.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday (Nov. 24)
at Covert Funeral Home, Ovid. A funeral service will be held
at 1pm on Tuesday (Nov. 25) at the Ovid Federated Church
officiated by Rev. Diane Walker.

Ellie was born on May 22, 1927 in Kingston, NY, a daughter of
the late Jesse and Hattie (Quick) Lacy. She was a 1950
graduate of the Syracuse University School of Nursing, and
then began a long career at Willard Psychiatric Center; from a
staff nurse, to nursing supervisor, and finally retiring from
the In-Service training program in 1982. As part of her nurses
training, she did a psychiatric rotation at Willard, where she
met her future husband, Ross. They were married on February
24, 1951. For more than 20 years, she considered Woodland
Hills in Clearwater, FL her home, where she and Ross spent
their winters.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Ross; a son,
David, both of Waterloo; a brother, Robert R.W. (Marjorie)
Lacy of Phoenix, AZ, numerous nieces and nephews, and by
Ross’s extended family. |

Estella G. “Stella” Mettler, age
78,
of Ovid, passed away at her home on Tuesday, (Nov 11).
The family will receive friends from 10:00am to 11:00 am on
Saturday, (Nov 15) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 So. Main
Street, Ovid, where a memorial service will follow at
11:00am, officiated by Rev. Diane Walker of the Ovid Federated

Estella was born on March 21, 1930, in Townsend, NY a daughter
of the late Ray and Maude (Davis) Kinner. She had been a
longtime resident of the Ovid and Trumansburg areas, and a
former member of the Ovid American Legion Post #463 Ladies
Auxiliary. She retired from Willard Psychiatric Center in
1987, where she had worked as a therapy aide. In addition to
her busy homemaking, she enjoyed playing cards, reading and
cooking for her family.
She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Francis Mettler;
sons, Albert Hughes Jr. of Seneca Falls, Geoffrey (Diane)
Hughes of Seneca Falls, and Russell (Kathy) Hughes of
Trumansburg; daughters, Lois (Sharon Minde) Hughes of Moravia
and Virginia Cirillo of Seneca Falls, her stepchildren, Danny
(Susan) Mettler of Elmira, Victor Mettler of Reston, VA and
Deborah Mettler of Horseheads, 7 grandchildren, 7 great

Timothy J. McDonald, age 42,
of Lodi, died unexpectedly on Sunday, November 9, 2008.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00pm on
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199

observed by the family on Thursday.

Tim was born in Geneva, NY on February 18, 1966, a son of Hugh
J. and Peggy (Hall) McDonald. He was a graduate of So. Seneca
High School, Class of 1984. He began working at Willard
Psychiatric Center in High School, and continued there, even
through it’s transition to Willard Drug Treatment Center. Upon
the opening of 5 Points Correctional Facility, he transferred
there, and worked as an engineer in the power plant. He was
recognized with an honorary membership to the South Seneca
Sportsmens Club following his death.
Tim is well known locally as “Timmy Tunes”. His love of music,
entertaining, and socializing led his DJ service to be sought
out by many. In his effort to give back to the community he
also volunteered his talents and services for fundraisers and
benefits. He will be fondly remembered for the love of his
motorcycle and snowmobile, his pug, wine and winemaking, and
music.
Tim is survived by his wife, Darlene; a son, Andy of Fair
Haven, NY; his pug, “baby girl” Darla; his mother, Peggy (Mel)
Oltz of Lodi, his brothers, Mark McDonald of Lodi, and Colin
(Andrea) McDonald of Nashville, TN; his sisters, Jacque Frere
of Waterloo and Debbie Baker of Newport News, VA, his nephews,
Derek, Chad and Bryant, and his nieces, Jenna, and Raena, his
aunts and uncles and several cousins. He was preceded in death
by his father, Hugh in 1988. |

Irene M. Ahouse, age 83,
of Lodi, passed away at her home on Friday (Nov.7).
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 1:00pm on

followed by a funeral service at 1:00pm officiated by Rev.
Cory Eckstrom of the Christ Lutheran Church in Sheldrake.

Irene was born on May 6, 1925, a daughter of the late Adolph
and Tillie (Brieker) Lentz. She moved to Lodi with her husband
in 1946, where she worked with him on the family farm. She
was a proud homemaker and mother, tirelessly providing the
comforts of a busy household. She was a member of the Eastern
Star, a highly skilled seamstress, actress, and active member
of the community. Her proud determination, wisdom and love
supported four generations of family. Her sister knows that
Irene’s essence was the music that was always in her soul and
heart. With love and admiration, her grandchildren especially
cherished her humor, keen wit, laughter, and unconditional
love. Along with her children, sister, family and friends,
they fondly recall and wish for her “happy days.”
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bernard C. Ahouse
of Lodi, her children, Karl S. Ahouse of Lakeland, FL, Susan
J. Ahouse of Wilmington, DE, Nancy E. Dayton of Ovid, and
Martin (Rebecca) Ahouse of Lodi; grandchildren, Brandy,
Stephen, Jill, Kari, Lisa, Laura, Emily, Joe and Alana, and
great grandchildren, Liam and Jack; a sister, Margaret “Peggy”

Mary Rose was born at home in the Town of Romulus on July 29,
1918, a daughter of the late Timothy A. and Catherine
(McKenna) Clair. She was a graduate of the Ovid HS Class of
1936, attended the Cortland Normal School, and graduated from
Cortland State University. She taught at Romulus Central
School for 26 years, and then finished her 42 year teaching
career at South Seneca Central School, all of which she taught
Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd grades. She was an active member of
the PTA, the Democratic Committee for the Town of Ovid, Seneca
County United Way, the American Cancer Society, and had been
the treasurer of the Ovid Youth Center for more than 30 years.
Her volunteerism was welcomed by the Ovid Food Pantry and the
Edith B. Ford Library. Mary Rose was a faithful communicant of
Holy Cross in addition to serving on the Altar Rosary Society,
and staffing the church office.
She is survived by her children; Glenn Joseph (Helen) Corcoran
of Willard, Janet (Arthur) Annechino of Fairport, Jyl Corcoran
of Ovid, and Kathryn (Bernd) Hofman of Rocky Mount, NC; her
grandchildren, Kelly (Bill) Mutschler, Joe (Maureen) Corcoran
of Pittsfield, MA, Jennifer (Jerrod) Starkey of Cape Coral,
FL, Janine Annechino of Newport Beach, CA, Kate Olschewske of

Norman E. Sickler Jr, age 65
of Willard, passed away at the Robert Packer Hospital in
Sayre, PA on Tuesday, November 4, 2008.

Norman was born on January 26, 1943 in Ithaca, NY a son of the
late Norman E. and Marjorie (Blackman) Sickler Sr. He was a
graduate of Ithaca High School and moved to the
Interlaken/Ovid area more than 35 years ago. He pursued a
goal, by obtaining a degree from FLCC. He then pursued a
dream, by working at South Seneca Central Schools, first as a
substitute teacher, followed by the summer school program, and
ultimately as a teacher’s aide in the Special Education Dept.
He then continued on as being care taker of Lakeview Cemetery
in Interlaken where this was his passion and admiration.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia, his children, Sandi Maki
of N.Carolina, Sheri Wright of Syracuse, Lori Carroll of
Willard, Susan Barry of N.Carolina, Robert Schlock of Seneca
Falls and Arissa Albro of Ovid; grandchildren, Forrest and
Wesley Wright, Michael, Justin and Robert Carroll, Mary Grace,
Anna and Aidan Barry, Blaze, Dakota Schlock and Michael
Walters, Erika and Sarah Albro; great grandson, Atticus Bothel;

Raymond Sheldrake,
formerly of Trumansburg, died on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 in
Sun City, FL.
Born in Prospect Park, NJ on September 7, 1923. His education
began in the public schools of Hawthorne, NJ and was completed
in the Vocational Agriculture Department of Central High
School in Paterson, NJ in 1942.
After serving three years with the Army Engineers in the
European theater of operations, he returned to Rutgers
University from which he received his Bachelor of Science
degree in Horticulture and Agricultural Education in June of
1949.
At the time of graduation from Rutgers, he was appointed to a
graduate research assistantship in the Division of Vegetable
Crops at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in
Geneva, NY. He received his Master of Science degree in
September 1950 and Doctor of Philosophy in June of 1952 from
Cornell University. His major field of study was Vegetable
Crops with minors in Plant Pathology and Soils.
Upon graduation from Cornell in 1952, he was appointed as
Vegetable Specialist in the Extension Service at the
University of Georgia. He served in this position until July
of 1954, at which time he accepted a position in the
Department of Vegetable Crops as an Assistant Professor at
Cornell University. On April 1, 1957, he was advanced to the
rank of Associate Professor and has served on the Graduate
Faculty since that time. On July 1, 1969, he became a full
Professor in the Department of Vegetable Crops at Cornell
University.
During this time, he was in a research field, but was called
upon considerably to assist out in the field by greenhouse
growers. His major fields of interest were in plastics for
agriculture, artificial soils, plant nutrition, and the
overall systems approach to protected cultivation or
controlled environmental agriculture.
Dr. Sheldrake retired from Cornell on January 1, 1979, and was
advanced to the rank of Professor Emeritus.
After his early retirement he founded and became the director
of the Sheldrake Research Center in Ithaca and the chief
consultant for W.R. Grace & Co. on soil development and plant
nutrition.
Ray and his wife Elsie H. Sheldrake founded and established
the Early Bird Farm in 1959, located on Elmira Road in Ithaca.
It was a retail greenhouse and road stand market which is
still growing at the present time.
After his “fall from grace”, as he put it (retirement from W.R
Grace), Ray retired to a home he built on Pennsylvania Avenue
in Trumansburg, NY. He later moved to Florida-Palmetto, then
to Sun City Center.
Ray is remembered by his many friends and colleagues as the
“Flying Professor”. He was a private pilot and owned several
airplanes. He would often fly his own plane to speaking
engagements and consulting jobs as well as family vacations.
Among his many accomplishments, he will be remembered for
being the father of the plastic greenhouse and developing the
peatlite mix (along with Jim Boodley), that is now used
world-wide! He also will be remembered for his work on plastic
mulch for field vegetables, drip irrigation, soluble plant
fertilizer, growing in bags, plant growth regulators and much
more.
Dr. Sheldrake was a great speaker and was knowledgeable in a
wide variety of topics in the Veg-Crops and Floriculture
Industry. Few people will ever forget his lively talks.
He is survived by his sons, Gregory R. Sheldrake and George A.
Sheldrake, both of Ithaca, and his daughters, Barbara
Bendzunas of Comer Georgia, and Connie O’Connell of
Mooresville, North Carolina. He is also survived by his
grandchildren, Cameron and Cody Sheldrake of Ithaca,
Elizabeth, Paul and George Bendzunas of Georgia, and Heather
Scrip of Ithaca and Michael Scrip of North Carolina. Ray was

Maurice L. Bond, age 85
of Romulus, passed away at Huntington Living Center on
Wednesday (Sept 24).
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday,
October 4, 2008 at the Varick United Methodist Church, with
Pastor Barbara De’Angelis officiating. Prayers of Committal
will be held at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken, with
military honors offered by the Ovid Color Guard and the

Maurice was born on February 4, 1923 in Valois, NY, a son of
the late Charles S. and Ethel M. (Foxx) Bond. He was a 1941
graduate of the Ovid High School. He joined the US Army in
1943 and and landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and fought all
through Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He
continued and was on hand when Germany surrendered. He
remained in Europe six months after the surrender and mustered
out as a Staff Sergeant on January 25, 1946.
Following his tour of military duty, he returned home to the
Valois area, and soon became employed at Willard State
Hospital, working as a licensed practical nurse, eventually
retiring after 31 years of State service in 1978. Following
his retirement, he and his wife spent 20 winters in Seminole,
FL. He had been a Life Member of the VFW Post #6200, American
Legion Post #463, and the So. Seneca Sportsmen’s Club and a
former member of the Seneca Falls Elk Lodge #992.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Mildred, his sons
Jeffrey (Betty) Bond of Romulus, James(Margaret) Bond of
Manassas, VA, his step daughters, Donna VanHoesen of Waterloo
and Doreen (Bob) McCann of Romulus, and grand children, Jason,
Julie, Mandy, Evie, Analisa, Jennifer, Brittany and Catherine.

Philomena "Fran" St. John, age 88,
former longtime resident of Interlaken, died Sunday, September
21, 2008, at Northwoods of Cortland.

Philomena was born on April 17, 1920 in Brewster, NY, a

great-grandchildren. She had been a member of the Red Hat
Society and enjoyed crafting and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughters, Joyce L. (Douglas) Parsons
of Morrisville, Allyson M. (Charles Crayton) St. John of
Interlaken; her grandchildren, Janette (Gene) Fleming, Kirk
(Barbie) Parsons, Carrie (Les Kraft) Parsons, Pam (Derek)

longtime resident of the Lodi and Ovid area, passed away
unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, September 11, 2008

Diane was born on January 24, 1950, in Seneca Falls, NY a
daughter of Donald G. and Beatrice (Chase) McIntosh. She was
a 1968 graduate of Ovid High School. She had worked at
Willard Psychiatric Center, the LaPinto Law Firm and BOCES in
Ithaca. Music was an important part of Diane’s life, and she
enjoyed playing both guitar and keyboard, Her love of animals
was second only to the love she showed for her family.
She is survived by her mother, Betty McIntosh of Ovid, a son,
David (Michele) Herndon of Willard, her grandchildren, Brandon
and Nikole Herndon, and sisters Joni Wilson of Phoenix, AZ,
Phyllis Parish of Ovid and Margaret Lypka of Watkins Glen and
several nieces and nephews. Diane was preceded in death by her

She is survived by her daughter; Mary Ann Hoven of Interlaken,
grandchildren; Shelly (Albert) Reese and Bradley (Sheila)
Barber;great grandchildren, Nicole Reese, Sheena Stuttle and
Cierra Barber, and by a brother John Bullivant. Katherine was

W. Thomas Wallace, age 78,
of Lodi, died at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester on
Sunday, September 7, 2008.

Tom was born on March 3, 1930 in Rochester, NY, the only child
of the late Wm. A. and Astrid (Anderson) Wallace. Following
his graduation from St. Lawrence University, Tom proudly
served his country during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to
1956. He then embarked on a long career with Eastman-Kodak,
retiring as the Director of Benefits in 1986. He and his wife
Pat moved from Greece, NY in 1996 to the home they built in
Lodi. Tom had been a Lay Leader at the Lake United Methodist
Church in Charlotte, a former Mason and served on the Board of
St. John’s Home in Rochester and as the Chairman of Membership
for the YMCA. Tom loved sports and was the 1947 City Tennis
Champion and the president of the Rochester ski club, and the
player/manager of the “Gypsies”, a men’s softball team
comprised childhood friends, who played for 33 years. While in
the Lodi area, he was a member of the Interlaken Reformed
Church, Lodi Historical Society, the Ovid-Willard Lions Club
and the Men’s Bible Study of the Ovid Federated Church.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pat, his children, W.
Thomas (Elisa) Wallace Jr. of Rochester, Beth (Tim) McGrath of
Rochester and Jason (Emily) Wallace of Canandaigua;
grandchildren Ryan, Blythe, Luke, Jesse, Maren, Jaden and

Marian E. Carmell, age 88,
formerly of Lodi, passed away on August 21, 2008 at the
Gowanda Nursing Facility.
Marian was born on January 6, 1920 in Lodi, NY a daughter of
the late Claude Neal, who was a longtime dairy farmer in Lodi,
and the late Edith (Campbell) Neal Clawson.
She was the wife of the late Leonard C. Carmell who died in
1996. She is survived by her sons, Carl Jr. (Jean) Carmell of
San Antonio, FL, Doug (Barb) Carmell of Perrysburg, NY, and
daughters, Joan (Ron) Welch of Interlaken, Nancy Orth of
Collins, NY and Debbie (Bil) Brinkerhoff of Lodi, 20
grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her son, Bobby Carmell, a grandson,
Steven and by a sister, Winnie Oyach.

passed away at Alterra in Ithaca, on Tuesday, August 26, 2008.

Walter was born on April 5, 1924, in Waterloo, the only son of
the late Walter T. and Julia (Murphy) Argus Sr. He was a
graduate of Ovid High School, and then proudly served his
country as a surgical technician during WWII in the US Army.
He was married to Jean Perpic on September 4, 1948, and
together they operated the Argus Drive-In for 42 years,
retiring in 1990. He had been a parishoner of Holy Cross
Catholic Church, and member of the VFW Post #6200 in Ovid. He
enjoyed golfing, carpentry, travel, and he was a diehard
Buffalo Bills fan. He and Jean wintered in Ft. Myers, FL for
many years after their retirement.
He is survived by his wife Jeannie, with whom he would have
celebrated 60 years of marriage in September, a son, Richard
D. (Laura) Argus of Geneva, and a daughter, Kathy L. (Craig
T.) Chaffee of Newfield, and grandchildren, Rachel N. and
Elisha D. Chaffee and Katrina L. and Bradley J. Argus. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Frances Gangl. |

James L. Davis, age 80,
of 8342 North Main Street, died at the Bixby Home on Saturday
(Aug 16).

Jim was born on December 30, 1927 in Wyalusing, PA, a son of
the late James and Myrtle (Lee) Davis. He was a graduate of
the Wyalusing Valley High School. He proudly served his
country during WWII as a pilot in the US Air Force.
At his request, Jim joined the Bixby family of veterans in
2000 from a VA facility in Canandaigua.

Rosie Lynch, 90,
of (Hayts Corners) Ovid, passed away at Lakeside Beikirch Care
Center in Brockport on Friday, August 15, 2008 after an
extended illness. She was a loving mother who enjoyed spending
time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Center.

Born February 25, 1922, Francis was a son of the late Howard
and Minnie (Whitaker) Holley. After graduation from Ithaca
High School, he joined the US Army where he proudly served for
over three years. Upon his honorable discharge in 1946,
Francis went to work as a heavy equipment operator at the
former Seneca Army Depot. He spent over thirty years in a job
he loved and formed many lifelong friendships along the way.
The most important thing in life to Francis was his family.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. He was always
there to offer help and support. He was happiest when he was
in his home spending time with his wife and working on his
home.
Francis leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Laura
“Peggy” (Sullivan) Holley of Ovid; a daughter, Barbara (Gary)
Alger of Ovid; a son John “Jack” (Linda) Holley of Ovid; his
grandchildren, Chris (Carol) Alger of Fulton, Shelley Reynolds
of Ovid, Laurie (Andrew) Nass of Romulus and Kathy Robinson of
Ovid; great-grandchildren, Joshua Alger, Mitchell and Abigail
Alger, Brett Robinson and Holly Reynolds. Francis is also

Rosemary was born on August 5, 1947 in Auburn, NY, a daughter

several years working in the accounting department for
American Red Cross and United Way of Seneca County. For the
past ten years she had operated Rosemary Elizabeth’s Gift Shop
in Lodi, where she put her “love of all things Victorian” to
work. Rosemary was a member of the Lodi Historical Society,
and was also a Barbra Streisand fan, especially her 1975 movie
“The Way We Were”. The movie “Titanic” also held special
meaning to Rosemary.
Rosemary is survived by her husband, Robert M. O’Brien, of
Lodi; her sons, David J. Thomas of Seneca Falls and Joseph J.
Thomas of Newark; a step-daughter, Stefanie C. Juby of Ithaca;
a step-son, Robert M. O’Brien Jr. of Lakeland, FL; and her
siblings, Judy (John) Pedlow of Grand Island, NY, and Edward
Piorun of Syracuse, NY. Rosemary is also survived by many
aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and her cat, Miles.

of Romulus, passed away at her home on Saturday, (July 26).

Donna was born on October 12, 1942 in San Francisco, CA, a
daughter of Donald F. and Marjorie (Cox) Drake. She moved to
Romulus in 1983, and worked at Willard Psychiatric Center in
both housekeeping and food service. Upon Willard’s closure,
she worked for Finger Lakes DDSO at the Romulus Family Care
Residence. Donna traveled extensively, loved animals, enjoyed
cooking and gardening and made certain that she was very
involved in the lives of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her partner of 27 years, Deborah Koziarski,
their children, Rebecca (John) Shoots of Romulus, Aaron
(Esperanza) Schultz of Ft.Lewis, WA, grandchildren, Elizabeth,
Katelynne, Rachel, Noah, Annaliese, Christopher, Michael and
Joshua, also surviving are her father, , and sisters, Vicki
(Ron) Leis of Kansas, Judy (Kevin) Kiechlin of Colorado, and
Shari Drake of New Mexico, a brother, Bud Drake of New Mexico.

“Oggie” Allen, age 92,
of Romulus, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Geneva
General Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00pm on

Ovid. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday
(July 3) at the West Fayette Church, with Pastor Stephen Beals

Oggie was born on March 25, 1916 in Geneva, a son of the late
Charles and Edna (Fridley) Allen. He graduated from Hobart
College, went on to complete his Master’s Degree at Cornell
University. While working towards his PhD at Cornell, he
served as an associate professor. His coursework was
interrupted by his draft notice into the US Army Air Corps. He
served his country during WWII in Guam. Upon his return, Oggie
had a long career with Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls. He was
one of the principal aerospace engineers working on the Gemini
Project of the late 1960’s. Following his retirement in 1975,
he returned to his lake home in Varick. Oggie had been a very
active member of the West Fayette Church.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna “Tootie” Allen of
Romulus, his daughters, Sharon Ross of Ovid, and Sue (Tim)
Allen of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Roger (MaryBeth)
Ross, Christy Ross, Jon Allen, Shari Brawley and Rachel
(Rocky) Anavo, and great grandchildren, Ethan, Justin and
Jordan Brawley, a brother, Dr. Willis (Vivian) Allen of
Ithaca, and several nieces and nephews. Oggie was preceded in
death by his son, Jan Allen and his son in law, Roger Ross in
2006, and by a brother Rynear Allen and a sister Arlene

Loleita Joyce Blass, age 75,
formerly of Spencer, passed away on April 22, 2008 at Seneca
View Nursing Facility in Montour Falls.
Joyce was born on March 17, 1933, a daughter of the late
Randolf and Lolita Grace (Harris) Scott. Joyce was married to
Richard D. Blass Sr. on April 22, 1951, and they had four
sons. She worked for Family and Children Services of Ithaca,
first as a home health aide, and then as a parent aide, which
she truly enjoyed. In 1990 she was named parent aide of the
year. Although she loved her work, her joy came from spending
time with her husband, Richard and their sons and
grandchildren.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Jr. (Pam) of Lodi,
William of Ayden, NC, Robert (Robin) of Whitney Point, and
Bruce of Ayden, NC, 10 grandchildren and 10 great
grandchildren, a sister, Wilma (Mike) of Newburg, NY , sisters
in law, Sharon and Evelyn. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Richard, and grandchildren Jeffery and Nathan, and by
brothers in law, John and Ed.
The family will hold a celebration of her life in the month of

Irene
Mason Egan, age 90,
formerly of Lodi and Ovid, died on February 26, 2008 in
Kissimmee, FL.
Irene was born on July 28, 1917 in Erieville, NY, a daughter
of the late Leonard and Delilia (Roahr) Owens. She graduated
from the Asbury College in Kentucky, and received her M.S. in
Nursing from the University of Rochester in 1957. She worked
for many years as a Registered Nurse in Psychiatrics. She
lived in the Binghamton area in the 1940’s, and NYC during the
1950’s, moving to Lodi in 1959, making Seneca County her home
until she returned to NYC. She retired from the NYC Public
School System in 1979. She was passionate about nursing,
continuing her education, and her gardening. She was the wife
of two husbands, and lived her life close to God. She had been
a member of both the Church of the Epiphany in Trumansburg and
St. Johns Church in Kissimmee, FL.
She is survived by her daughter, Emma Mason of Lodi, her
beloved grandson, Brandon Douglas of Lodi, and a brother,
Wayne L. Owens, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was
preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Mason in 1983, and
by Herbert Egan in 1995.

David M. Arkland, age 73,
of Ovid, passed away quietly at Geneva General Hospital on
Wednesday (Apr 30).
He was born on June 1, 1934 in Buffalo, NY a son of the late
Ezra and Violet (Cornish) Arkland. David taught art in grades
1-6 at Wilson Central School and later art for grades K-12 at
South Seneca Central Schools until retiring in 1991. He was
active in youth programs, having worked with a 4-H group at
Ransomville, NY and later led the S.S.C.S. chess club. He was
an arts and crafts instructor for the Ovid Youth Board for 35
summers. David actively worked with school and community
theater groups and both the Boy and Girl Scouts.
David is survived by his wife of 44 years, Nancy Dold Arkland,
his daughter, Sally (Darryl) Adolf of King’s Mountain, NC; his
son, David (Sheri) Arkland of Ovid, a sister, Joyce Sherman of
Newfane, NY and a brother in law, Raymond Forsyth. He was
preceded in death by a brother and sister in law, Ezra “Easy”
and Elowyn Arkland, and by a sister, Janice Forsyth.
A Memorial Service will be held at Noon on Saturday, May 3,
2008, at the Ovid Federated Church, officiated by Rev. Diane

Rosalie Grizenko, age 81,
of Lodi, died at the Huntington Living Center in Waterloo on
Sunday, (Apr 20)
The family will receive friends from 10am to 11am on Friday
(Apr 25) at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ovid. A Funeral Mass
will be celebrated there at 11am by Fr. Thomas Mull, prayers
of committal will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Ovid. In

Rose was born on October 10, 1926 in Oberhaching, Germany, and
moved to the United States in 1951. She and her family moved
to this area in 1968, and ultimately made their home in Lodi.
She retired as a supervisor in the housekeeping department of
Willard Psychiatric Center after 20 years of service. She was
also distinguished as Employee of the Year prior to her
retirement.
She is survived by her children, Paul (Judy) Grizenko of
Dundee, Ann (Bill) Trim of Lodi, Lore (Jack) Mull of Waterloo,
Michael (Sue) Grizenko of CO and Joseph (Lisa) Grizenko of OH,
14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, a sister, Alfreda
Echtler and a brother, Hans Swartz both of Germany. Rose was
preceded in death by her husband Paul in 1996, a daughter,
Sybella in 1981 and by her siblings, Martin, Herman, Joe, Anna
and Freda.

Patricia A. Lichak, age 74,
of Waterloo, died at Geneva General Hospital on Thursday,
April 17, 2008.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday, (Apr
22) at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main Street, Ovid. A funeral
service will be held there at 11am on Wednesday (Apr 23),
officiated by Pastor Diane Walker, of the Ovid Federated

Pat was born on September 19, 1933 in Ovid, a daughter of the
late Robert and Marjorie (Schaut) Montford. She was a graduate
of Ovid High School, and had worked at Willard Psychiatric
Center for many years as a therapy aide. Pat continued working
as a home health aide, until just prior to her death.
Pat was a caregiver for her parents prior to their deaths, and
she was very attentive to her grandchildren. Her pride and
attention to appearance will be fondly remember by those who
knew her, and she enjoyed her daily lunches out, flower
gardening, and knitting.
She is survived by her sons, John (Bonnie) of Nassau, NY,
Steven of Lodi, Robert (Lisa) of Seneca Falls, and George
(Michelle Clark) of Romulus, 4 grandchildren, her siblings,

Alfred “Pete” Jackson age 73
of Ovid, died Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Cayuga Medical
Center.
Friends may call at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 S. Main St.,

Pete was born on August 13, 1934 in the Town of Ulysses, a
son of the late Clarence and Anna (Percey) Jackson. He was
employed at Willard State Hospital before entering the US
Army, where he proudly served for 3 years, as well as serving
in the Army Reserves for an additional 18 years.
After his military duty and being employed in various other
occupations, Pete returned to work at Willard Psychiatric
Center in the early 80’s, subsequently retiring from there in
1995. He was a life member and a past Commander of the Ovid
American Legion Post #463, a life member of the Ovid VFW Post
#6200, a member of the Ovid Color Guard, the Interlaken and
the South Seneca Sportsmen’s Clubs. Pete was an extraordinary
volunteer, offering help at most every function held at the
Ovid American Legion. He also spent countless hours driving
Military Veterans to their appointments.
He is survived by his wife Lois Jackson of Ovid; his children
Michael Jackson of Interlaken, Steve (Alberta) Jackson of
Lodi, Tim (Tina) Jackson of FL, Linda (Jeff) Rozelle of
Mecklenburg, and Kevin (Carol) Jackson of Ovid; a
step-daughter, Jacalyn Yonker of Newark; seven grandchildren
and three great grandchildren. Pete is also survived by his
brother, Dave (Carol) Jackson of Ovid; and his sisters, Joyce
Moss of CA and Leona (Carl) Tracy of SC. Pete was preceded in
death by a sister, Lois Ross. |

of Willard, died at Geneva General Hospital on Wednesday, (Mar

Louis was born on March 20, 1922 in Orangeville, NY a son of
the late George and Laura (Phillips) Thomas. He proudly
defended his country as a US Army Sergeant during WWII,
serving in the Southern Philippines. He was married to
Pauline on March 3, 1948, and moved to the Willard area. He
retired from Willard Psychiatric Center, where he had worked
as a nurse’s aide for many years. Louis enjoyed flowers,
gardening and lawn work, he maintained several lawns in the
summer and cleared snow during the winter following his
retirement, until he was 80. His love of the outdoors and
fishing was followed by his membership to the South Seneca
Sportsmen’s Club. He was a life member of the VFW Post #6200
in Ovid, and a Member of American Legion Post #463 in Ovid.
Louis is survived by his wife, Pauline of Willard, his
daughter, Linda Sue Thomas Fiorelli, a grand daughter, Cherie
Lynn Fiorelli and a great grand daughter, Justine Fiorelli
Cruz all of Waterloo, a son in law, Gerald Vaughn and a
grandson, Brian Vaughn of Maryland and brothers, George,
William, and Norman Thomas, and by a sister, Lillian Garwood.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lou Vaughn a

John Internicola, age 82
of 1413 Main St., Willard, died at home on March 17,
Burial will be at 1PM on Monday, March 24 at Bath National
Cemetery.
Born May 25, 1925 in New York City, John was the son of the
late Paul and Rose (Sodo) Internicola. He proudly served in
the U.S. Army and was employed at the Nevele Country Club in
Ellenville, NY.
John leaves behind a brother; his adopted family, Cindy and
Buster Brown; and numerous friends who will miss him dearly.
John enjoyed watching TV, shopping, movies and camping trips,
especially at Kendaia Campground.

George D. Prentice, age 61
of Ovid, died at his home on Monday (March 17).

George was born on March 15, 1947 in Sewickley, PA, a son of
the late John and Sylvania (Byrd) Prentice. He graduated from
the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in 1965, and taught sign
language classes throughout his lifetime. He was active in the
Ovid-Willard Lions Club, serving as Past-President, Tail
Twister, and as the NY Speech and Hearing Chairman for
District 20 E-2. He was involved in all of his sons sports at
South Seneca, and he was passionate about basketball. He was
also a member of AA. His work history included 29 years of
state service at Willard and Elmira Psychiatric Centers, and
he recently retired from University Hospital in Syracuse as a
maintenance supervisor. He is survived by his wife, Julie
Watson Prentice, his sons, Matthew and Adam Prentice, his best
friend, John (Frances) Radcliffe, the angel by his side, Betsy
Sayer. Erik Smith and Ashlee Langley have been a part of the
Prentice household for 6 years. He is survived by his
brothers, Ronald, Donald (Joanne), John (Barb), James (Nancy),
Vincent and David Prentice, and sisters, Jean (Gerald) Scimio,
Beverly Campbell, and Mary (Jack) Zilian, 25 nieces and
nephews that includes his special niece and nephew, Lisa
Scimio and Jeff Gomez, his sister in law, Linda Watson and
brother in law, Robert Watson. He was preceded in death by
his brother Robert, a sister, Bitsy Rygalski and by his in

Shirley D. Odomirok, age 87
lifetime resident of Ovid, died on Sunday, (March 16) at her
Ann Street home.

Shirley was born June 16, 1920 in Geneva, a daughter of the
late Dr. Clarence and Estelle (Crispin) Dunbar. Dr. Dunbar was
the primary dentist at the Willard State Hospital. The family
moved to Willard, and Shirley attended school on the grounds
of what is now known as the Ovid Federated Church. Shirley
graduated from the Elmira Academy and attended a private
commercial school, and did some modeling work in New York
City. During WWII, she worked in Rochester with the Office of
the War Department and then at Sampson and the Department of
the Navy where she was a secretary in the Commodore’s office.
It was during that time that she met Walter, who after boot
camp was assigned to the base in 1944. After the base closed
in 1946, Shirley transferred to the Naval Base at Bainbridge,
Maryland and then to Washington DC where she and Walter
continued a relationship, upon his discharge from the Navy, he
returned to a job with the US Government. He proposed to her
and gave her a ring at lunch on Pennsylvania Avenue. They were
married in Ovid at the former Presbyterian Church on January
25, 1947, after which they returned to Washington to a newly
developed apartment complex. A few months later, her brother
Jack, a retired Air Force pilot, was killed in an automobile
accident. As a result, they decided to leave their jobs in
Washington and begin a new life in Ovid.
Their daughter, Nancy was born in November 1947, and Shirley
worked at the new High School, until Walter became a General
Insurance Agent and Real Estate Broker where they worked
together for many years with an office on Main Street.
Shirley was active in the PTA, Ovid Federated Church as an
officer and member of the choir, and a member and past
president of the 20th Century Club. She also enjoyed playing
golf and her membership at the Seneca Falls Country Club.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 61 years, Walter, and
daughter, Nancy Ewing of Deerfield Beach, FL, and her
grandchildren, Lisa Pemberton and Brian (Stacy) Pemberton, and
sisters in law, Marion and Helen Odomirok. |

Born in Newark, NJ, Colleen was a daughter of Frank and
Maryann Reilly.
She enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, and she loved

John was born on December 22, 1929, in Ithaca, NY, a son of
the late Edmond and Bertha Granger. He was married to Gwen
Vreeland on November 13, 1954, and then served in the USArmy
until 1956. He operated his farm on West Blaine road for many
years, and then worked with Kaiser Farms of Romulus until his
retirement in 1997. John was a longtime member of the Farm
Bureau, and he often attended the NYS Fair and Empire Farm
Days. He became a resident of Huntington Living Center in 2007
and enjoyed the company of meeting new friends during his stay
there.
He is survived by his sons, Edward L. (Mary Ellen) of
Interlaken, Donald A. (Jennifer) of Ovid, Bruce A. (Melissa)
of Interlaken and a daughter, Janice M. (Jodie) Steele of
Geneva, his grandchildren, Linda, Tina and Lee Granger, Jamie,
Tiffany and Jeremy Granger, Nicholas and Jacob Granger and his
great grandchildren, Dana and Morgan Stoutenger, his brothers,
James R. of California and Ralph E. of Poughkeepsie. John was
preceded by his wife, Gwen in 1999 and by a brother, Louis.

Franklin P. Moses, age 94
of Ovid, passed away at Huntington Living Center, following a
brief hospitalization and illness.
There will be a private memorial conducted by his family at
later date, in observance of Frank’s wishes. For those who

Ovid.
Frank was born on December 14, 1913 in Seneca Falls, NY. He
served his country during WWII, enlisting at the age of 27. He
returned to the area, and eventually worked at Willard
Psychiatric Center as a boiler operator, and then Sampson
State Park. He had been a Life Member of both the VFW Post
#6200 and American Legion Post # 463 of Ovid, and a member of
the South Seneca Sportsmen’s Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Moses of Ovid, a son,
Robert (Penny) Moses of Arab, AL, and step children, Dennis
Herndon of W.Virginia, Kenneth and David Herndon of Ovid,

of Lodi passed away peacefully at her Seneca Lake home on
Monday, January 28, 2008.
Madge was born on May 24, 1930 in Avoca, PA, the daughter of
the late Kenneth F. and Marjorie Swartz Collins. She had
worked as a secretary for the Susquehanna Valley Central
School District at the Brookside Elementary School for more
than 20 years. Madge had been a member of the Conklin Forks
United Methodist Church, and also volunteered in the sewing
room of the Broome Developmental Center. She was active in
Bible Study, UMW and the food pantry outreach of the Ovid
Federated Church. She and her husband made Lodi their
permanent residence after retirement and spent many years
wintering in Florida.
She loved her family and friends, and her days were often
spent doing things for the comfort and care of others. Madge
was a very loving mother, wife, grandmother and friend.
Madge is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard G.
Benedict of Lodi, and daughters, Renee E. (Robert) Dexter of
Owego, and Shirley A. Benedict of Binghamton, her grandsons,

Serven
of East Lake Road, Romulus, passed away on February. 6, 2008,
at home, following a courageous three year battle with cancer.
A memorial service, officiated by Pastor Dale Andrews, will be
held at 2 p.m. all Tuesday (February 12) at Covert Funeral

Born March 15, 1949, in Geneva. Craig was the son of Harold P.
and Betty (Craig) Serven. He graduated from Romulus Central
School and attended Oswego State College. Craig worked with
computer systems in various positions. He was last employed at
ITT Gould Pumps in Seneca Falls. During his youth, Craig was
involved in Boy Scouts. He was the first scout to receive the
"God & Country" award from The First Baptist Church of Geneva.
Craig also enjoyed fishing, bowling, and he enjoyed sharing a
bottle of good wine with friends.
He is survived by two sons, Scott Serven of Webster and Bryan
Serven of Rochester; his mother, Betty C. Serven of Romulus;
three sisters, Marcia (David) Lerkins of Romulus, Gail Serven
of Romulus and Dawn Coleman of Geneva. He is also survived by

Madge is survived by her husband of 59 years, Richard G.
Benedict of Lodi, and daughters, Renee E. (Robert) Dexter of
Owego, and Shirley A. Benedict of Binghamton, her grandsons,
Mark (Bridget) Dexter of North Carolina and Chad Dexter of
Binghamton.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 pm on
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main
Street, Ovid, NY
The family will also receive friends from Noon until 2:00pm on
Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the Wm. R Chase & Sons Funeral
Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, NY, where a funeral
service will be held at 2:00pm. Prayers of Committal will be
held at Vestal Hills Cemetery.

Gloria J. Sturdivant, age 59
formerly of Ovid, died January 19, 2008 at Huntington Living
Center.
Calling hours will be held at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 S.
Main St., Ovid from 1-2pm, Monday, January 28, 2008, followed
by a funeral service, officiated by Rev. Judy Peppard, at
2pm. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Interlaken.
Gloria was born July 23, 1948 in Montour Falls, the daughter
of Barton L. and Betty (Champion) Potter.
She was preceded in death by her father.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her sons, Kevin
(Kristine) Carmell of Seattle, WA, Jerry Carmell of Lansing
and Gary Carmell of Cortland; brothers, Jim (Marcia) Bennett
of Montour Falls and Dean (Jean) Potter of Canandaigua. Gloria
is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary
G. Somerville, age 100
of Geneva, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ, on January 9, 2008.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30pm on Sunday, January
13, 2008, at the Finger Lakes Baptist Church (Yale Station
Road and Route 96A), officiated by her son, Pastor Robert
Somerville and grandson, Pastor Barry Somerville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials contributions may be made to
Finger Lakes Baptist Church, 1000 Yale Station Road, Geneva,
where Mary had been a member for many years.
Mary was born on July 6, 1907, the first of eight children
born to Lew and Clara Gambee. She lived her entire life in
Seneca County and graduated in the second class from Romulus
High School. She went on to teacher training classes and
taught for three years in a one-room schoolhouse. On August
17, 1929 she married her high school sweetheart, Oren
Somerville. After Oren’s death in 1958, Mary returned to
teaching at Romulus Central School until her retirement in
1973.
She is survived by four children: Jim (Dorothea), Wesley
(Lorraine), Robert (Mary) Somerville and Mary Lou Hohman. She
is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren,
5 great-great grandchildren, and her sister Virginia McAvinney.
Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main Street, Ovid has assisted the
family with arrangements.

Norman R. “Zeke” Wells, 77
died peacefully at his home in Ovid on Wednesday, January 2,
2008.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at
Seneca-Union Cemetery in Valois on Monday, January 7, 2008 at
noon. Following services the family will be hosting friends
at Zeke’s home at 7289 Ann St., Ovid.
Born November 6, 1930 in Montour Falls, NY, Norman was a son
of the late Lee Charles and Eva B. (Barrett) Wells. In 1949
he proudly entered service in the U.S. Army, where he served
his country, was a bronze star recipient, and was honorably
discharged in 1952. He was employed by Willard Psychiatric
Center and retired from there as a nursing supervisor in
1985. Norman was a life member of Ovid VFW Post 6200 and the
Lodi Volunteer Fire Department. He also was an avid gardener.
In addition to his parents, Norman was preceded in death by
his wife, Margaret “Peg” Wells; a brother, Tom Wells; sisters,
Betty Jane Brock and Athelia Hunt; and longtime companion,
Margaret Riley.
He is survived by his sons, David of Valois, Phillip “P.J.” of
Clarks Summit, PA, Norman of Ithaca, Steven Michael “Spaz” of
Ovid; and a daughter, Beth Ann McPherson of Nampa, ID.
Norman is also survived by six grandchildren and a sister,
Della Manning of Clinton, NY.
